Windows 7 is here! What to do? What to do?
Has Microsoft finally developed an heir to the XP throne?

Windows 7 is here and the early feedback from our geeks who beta tested it as well as our customers who are now using it, is very positive. Contrary to our previous early experiences with Windows XP and Windows Vista, it appears that Microsoft has done a superior job of ironing out bugs and making Windows 7 stable and useable from the outset.

What does this mean for you? It means you've finally got a viable option for moving up from Windows XP, and maybe more importantly, you've got an upgrade path from Windows Vista that takes you forward instead of backwards.

Is it perfect? Well, no, but it's a lot closer to ideal than it's predecessor was at release time.

What does Geek Housecalls recommend? Geek Housecalls recommends the following:

  • Windows Vista users who are experiencing problems would be best to upgrade to Windows 7 rather than attempting to, or waiting for a fix for Vista.
  • Windows XP users who are looking for specific solutions or compatibility might consider an upgrade to Windows 7, but may be better off just buying a new Windows 7 system as the upgrade path from XP to Win7 is both difficult and time consuming.
  • New computer buyers would be well advised to get the new computer with Windows 7 pre-installed.

What do I need to know about Windows 7? Like any new software product there could be unforeseen issues, so if you prefer a conservative approach, it's probably best to hang back for 3-6 months and let the early adopters find any problems. At this point in time. probably the biggest question new Win7 users face is how to get email. Unlike its predecessors that included either the Outlook Express or Windows Mail email client, Windows 7 does not include an email client. That means Win7 users must either use a web-based email solution, or a third party email client like Thunderbird or Eudora, or a service like Microsoft's Windows Live Mail. Depending on where you buy your PC, this may be less of an issue, as some manufacturers are taking matters into their own hands and bundling Windows Live Mail or other solutions as part of their offering.

How can Geek Housecalls help? Our geeks have Windows 7 experience and are available to help no matter how simple or complex your need. Whether helping to order or set up up a new PC or upgrading an old one, connecting to a network, or sharing a printer or folders, we can help. And if you need help figuring out the best way to do email in the new Win7 environment, we can help with that too. In short, we can make sure that your transition to Windows 7 is simple and painless.
